An Imhoff sedimentation cone is a laboratory device used to determine the settleable solids in a sample of water or wastewater. It consists of a transparent conical vessel with a stopcock at the bottom, which can be used to drain the settled solids.
To use the Imhoff cone, a known volume of the sample is poured into the cone and left to stand for a specified period of time, typically 1 hour. During this time, the solids in the sample settle to the bottom of the cone. After the settling period, the stopcock is opened and the settled solids are allowed to drain out of the cone.
The settleable solids are typically expressed as a volume or weight of solids per unit volume of water. The Imhoff cone is a relatively simple and inexpensive method for determining settleable solids and is commonly used in wastewater treatment plants and other water quality monitoring applications.
